2011/12 Consultations

When it comes to designing routes and cycle infrastructure accessing local knowledge is key to getting the best possible results. Therefore consultation with the local community, including both people who already cycle and use the route in question or potential cyclists who would use the route if improved, is a very important part of the process.

As part of the development of the strategic cycle network we carried out a range of different engagement sessions with internal officers and external stakeholders.

We also held a series of fun, interactive events in an empty shop on Queen Street as an opportunity to engage with the wider public.

Based on the responses to all of these consultation sessions the draft cycle network plan evolved and grew. We now have a plan identifying 9 strategic routes and a web of interlinking routes.

Our Strategic Cycle Map

Consultation continues to play a key role in the development of the network. We take seriously the design and legibility of all of our leaflets and site notices, as we believe this plays an important role in the extent to which people engage and the extent to which we can get their valuable input.

We also, whenever possible, hold exhibitions in public spaces to give people an opportunity to discuss plans with us face to face. So far this year we’ve held two such events in Hungry Planet, Roath; two in the Star Centre, Splott; and one outside Sainsburys in Thornhill.
