Walk to School Month

Cardiff Council and Sustrans are continuing to work together to encourage children in Cardiff to Walk to school at least once a week. Our spring Walk to School Month follows the successful autumn event when more than 30 schools and nearly 10,000 pupils took part.

During the spring project there will be a number of additional events to promote walking – these include the Big Walk to School on Wednesday 8th May and the Walking Festival.

Walking is a great way to travel to school and not one which is restricted to spring and summer alone.

The benefits of include:

  • Fewer cars being used for short school journeys – which reduces congestion and improves safety around the school entrances
  • Increased physical activity levels of children – which is good for their health as well as being shown to improve alertness and attainment at school
  • Better familiarity with a child’s local area, and
  • More opportunities to talk to friends and members of the community - the walk to school is a great time to chat.

The first ‘Walk to School Month’ in 2013 will run throughout May
