Radnor Primary School

Radnor Primary School takes a whole-school approach to embedding a culture of active travel in to school life.  From letting pupils lead the way to working in partnership with local organisations, the school has developed many projects to get more children active and travelling actively.

The Active Journeys Crew is part of the Sustrans’ Active Journeys programme.   The school has been working with Sustrans Cymru for 2 years and recommends applying to be part of the programme to begin your school’s active travel journey.  You can apply to Sustrans’ Active Journeys programme here

Radnor Primary School takes a whole-school approach to embedding a culture of active travel in to school life.  From letting pupils lead the way to working in partnership with local organisations, the school has developed many projects to get more children active and travelling actively.

The school has an Active Journeys Crew, part of the school Senedd, where pupils develop ideas and initiatives to encourage active travel to school.  Whole school events such as Halloween Scootacular/ Spook Your Spokes is an opportunity for all pupils to get involved.  Pupils have also developed their own initiatives like ‘Boot N Scoot’.  This project encourages families who live a bit further from school to make part of their journey active.

The school’s most recent initiative is a partnership with Mike Jones and the Free Bikes 4 Kids project.  Using refurbished bikes provided by Mike Jones, Radnor Primary School plan to gift bikes to pupils who do not own a bike so that they can try cycling to school.  The school’s goal by the end of this project is to ensure every pupil at Radnor has a bike and therefore the option to cycle to school.

Kane Morgan, Year 6 teacher and Physical Activity Lead tells us

‘Being active in the morning has proven to ensure your brain functions better. Pupils are healthier and more awake to begin lessons.’

It is not just about the journey to school.  As one of their ‘Radnor University’ courses, pupils took part in cycling sessions with Welsh Cycling whilst Year 5 and 6 pupils are about to take part in a workshop to aid the design of new infrastructure outside their school.  This is part of Cardiff Council’s Safe Routes in Communities Scheme.

Plans for next year include incorporating their newly acquired Bike Fleet in to PE lessons and training two teachers to become ride leaders.  Their aspiration is to include led rides as part of the school day supporting their health and wellbeing learning experience.  With further future ambitions of setting up cycling buses for pupils along with some teachers to travel to school together.
