Junctions
Signalised junctions
Cyclists will be accommodated at signalised junctions through either dedicated crossings or a continuation of the cycle lane.
Castle Street / North Road / Boulevard de Nantes
The bidirectional cycle lane on the north side of Castle Street will link to corresponding provision on the south side of Boulevard de Nantes via a signalised junction. A parallel crossing will be provided for cyclists alongside a traditional pedestrian crossing. This will be controlled by a shared crossing phase.
Castle Street / Westgate Street
The bidirectional cycle lane on the north side of Castle Street will link to one-way segregated cycle lanes on Westgate Street via this signalised junction. Two dedicated crossings will be provided for cyclists and will be controlled by a cycle-only signal phase.
Westgate Street / Park Street
Westgate Street provides one-way cycle lanes on each side of the road. Lower Westgate Street provides a one-way cycle lane in the northbound direction only. Advanced Stop Lines (ASL) will be provided to allow cyclists to bypass motorised traffic. Cyclists travelling southbound on Westgate Street will be guided towards cycling provision on Park Street and Havelock Street. This right turn will be marked to provide indication of route continuity to all road users.
Wood Street / Havelock Street & Wood Street / Westgate Street
Cyclists will be accommodated through the junctions on Wood Street with ASLs, or the continuation of the cycle lane to the stop line. At this point, the cycle lane will move on-street. Cycle lanes will be marked through each junction to provide awareness to all road users.
Priority junctions
At priority junctions, cyclists travelling on the major arm will generally be given priority over motorised traffic on the minor arm through a continuation of the cycle lane. The cycle lane will be marked to emphasise priority.
Bus stop bypasses
The City Centre West cycle route includes bus stop bypasses to maintain continuous separation from motorised traffic for cyclists, rather than having to route the cycle track into the road, in front of the bus stop.
