Walking to School

The Government says children should have 60 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each day. This can be built it up gradually with six 10-minute bursts spread throughout the day.

Teachers say that children who walk to school arrive ready for their day and concentrate better.

Your school may already run a ‘walking bus’ or you might just meet up with your friends and neighbours to make the trip.

Why not take look at what Walk to School Week and Walk to School Month are all about to start you off.

Walk to Work

30 minutes of moderately intensive exercise at least five days a week is the recommended activity level for adults. Active commuting is a simple way of building physical activity into your daily routine.

Walking can be easily combined with bus or train journeys – giving you an opportunity to be active no matter how long your commute.

There are resources available on the Planning Your Journey page to help you to plan your trip.

Walk

Widened footways, more pedestrian crossings in useful places, slower traffic and less clutter on the streets are all helping Cardiff to make an environment that is better for walking.

Cardiff also has a really good choice of green spaces offering traffic free walking routes which are ideal for commuting and for leisure.

Key routes for walking and cycling in Cardiff include:

  • The Rhymney Trail – which runs for 3.5km connecting Rhymney and Llanrumney in the east with Llanedyrn and Pentwyn in the west, via Rhymney Hill Gardens.
  • The Ely Trail – which links St Fagans to the International Sports Village in Cardiff Bay, where it joins the Bay Trail.
  • The Bay Trail – a circular 10km trail which takes in the bay attractions, Pont y Werin and the barrage.
  • The Nant Fawr trail – which provides a pleasant walk, connecting Waterloo gardens in the south with the Ridgeway Walk in the north.
  • And finally, the historic Taff Trail – that runs north to south along the banks of the River Taff, linking Cardiff Bay, the city centre and Bute Park, running 89km in total and ending in the heart of Brecon.
